Looking for opinions on the best slugs out there for an 870 with a rifled barrel? Heading to Indiana this year for gun season and have no idea whats the best ammo out there?

Re: Best Slug?

Not a slug gun hunter but I've heard great things about the Hornady SST's! Good luck on your hunt!

Re: Best Slug?

I'll 2nd the SST's and I also like the Barnes Xpanders.
With that said, it all depends on what "your" particular gun likes.... You and 2 friends can all shoot 870's and it is conciviable that NOT all 3 guns will shoot the same ammo the best.
Get a box or 2 of several different brands and shoot them and see what patterens the best for "your" gun.
Starting with the SST's is a good bet though....

Re: Best Slug?

I have an 870 slug gun. Not a barrel swap job. But Direct from the factory. Nice rifled barrel. Nice laminated stock......hated factory slugs. I tried every Winchester, federal, Remington,....you name it. Finally I tried one last thing. I rolled my own. Gave a guy in Bedford a call. Slugs R US. Bought the hulls, and the hammer head slugs in the sabot. Put it together over 36 grains of herco and wammo. Great accurate combo.

Note, you need to roll crimp these not star crimp them.

Re: Best Slug?

I was shooting Winchester partition golds and Remington accu tips. Was getting OK groups but not what I wanted.
I did some research and read that the barrel I have with a 1 in 35" twist will not shoot well with high velocity slugs.
A 1 in 28" twist is better suited for the faster slugs.
I'm going to try the Rottweil Lazer Slugs available thru Slugs R Us.
You can google to get their website that has a video about the slug.
They look pretty mean at a good price.
$9.99 for 5 shells.
The Accu tips I was shooting go for around $20.00 for a box of 5.
Good luck in your quest.
I'll be sighting in a new scope on my slug gun in about 3 weeks, I'll post a report about the new slugs.

Re: Best Slug?

Truth of the matter is no matter what the suggestions are the best slug for my gun may not be yours.
It's trial and error and may be a little costly, but that's just the way it is.
You can already see the number of suggestions so far.
Like I posted the rate of twist in your gun along with the velocity of the slug you intend to shoot could help narrow down your decision.
Good Luck
