Scope on a shotgun?

I had my son's youth model 1187 Rem in 20 gauge to a gunsmith last night to have it drilled and tapped for a red dot scope. he informed me that he would have to drill through both the receiver and the tongue of the barrel that slides in the receiver to make it work as the metal alone on the receiver is too thin. Therefore whenever the gun needed cleaned the scope and all would have to come off. Does anyone know of another way to mount a scope on this gun? I already checked with B-Square and their saddle mount does not fit a youth model.

Re: Scope on a shotgun?

Am curious: why scoping this firearm?
For deer and turkey?
If for deer, it would worth the $ to purchase a H&R 20 ga. slug gun.
No suggestion for turkeys, but at 30 yards, is a scope really needed?

Re: Scope on a shotgun?

if for deer - cantilever barrel. Ive heard of others with this same issue, and someone had a way of beefing up the metal on the top of the receiver to take a weaver rail. Might have even had the weaver rail welded on?

Re: Scope on a shotgun?

I have the same problem with a 20 ga Ultra light weight Reminton Shotgun.

My solution was to add a tube/florescent sight (comes for Vent rib or plain.
These are very different, in that they are in a recessed tube; which makes the head line up. Best turkey sight on the market and works good for deer. it is made for small game hunting and target, and I use mine on grouse, rabbits, and woodcock.

Re: Scope on a shotgun?

If for turkey, I'd go with some fiber optic/peep/ghost ring type of sight. If for deer, look into getting a rifled cantiliver barrel. Good luck either way!

Re: Scope on a shotgun?

Yes, it is for my 7 year old for spring gobbler. I'm wondering if this might be my only option?

It shows a cantelever barrel.
I have a smooth bore cantelever barrel (threaded chokes) on my 870 for coyotes with a red-dot scope. I don't see why they wouldn't make the same for an 1187.

Re: Scope on a shotgun?

I have same set up as above for my 870 use screw in rifled choke tube for deer with Foster type slugs and superfull turkey choke Federal 3" 5's on Gobblers. Many have fallen very few have risen.
Haven't seen anything like that in 20 Ga though.

Re: Scope on a shotgun?

look in to b square mount a little further. a 1187 youth model should just have a shorter barrel and stock, but use a standard 20g 1187 receiver

Re: Scope on a shotgun?

Thanks for the suggestions. Cabelas only has a slug barrel for an 1187 in 20 ga. I called and asked a representative from B-Square and he said the serial # would have to end in X or N for the saddle mount to fit. Our 20 ga does not. Also explains it on this link at the top.
