The tide is slowly turning on slug guns and the 20 ga. is becoming more and more popular I have noticed.

Those H&R slug guns are a real good price for the quality i think. I wouldn't mind grttin one but i'ed stick with 12ga. Put a scope on it NICE....later

Re: H+R SLUG GUN,20 Ga.?

Years ago when I lived in DE a friend had an H&R ultra 12, In my opinion it shot a really tight group at 100 yrds, close to all touching if I remember and maybe a 2-3 in group at 150 yrds. I remember it really liking the remington copper solids. It was heavy but not unbearable and more specifically front heavy. On the upside the weight made it recoil less than my mossberg 695. Over all It was a good gun and I liked the Ultra. Using a quality slug 20 ga is more than enough to put a deer on the ground. From what if heard and or read you pick up some velocity over the 12 and get a flatter trajectory. Try out the different slugs and see what it likes and go from there.

Re: H+R SLUG GUN,20 Ga.?

i bought one in 20 guage 2 years ago and I have taken quite a few deer with it. it shoots like a rifle in my opnion. It's on the heavy side but it's not unbearable as others have also said. Mine likes the Copper Solids. some guys don't like the idea of a single shot but it's soo accurate with a good rest you don't need more than one shot. I was hunting in MD wiht a buddy wehre it's slug only and I took 3 does that the slug passed right through so fast I thought I missed all 3 times. the deer literally did not flinch when hit. they took a few more steps and jsut fell over. i can't say enough good about the gun.

I use those copper solids in my 870 slug bbl. they do drop a deer for sure. Your right about the first shot I let my deer come in so my shots are 40yds. or less so one shot would be ok. I've seen guys with the 2 round slug holder on the stock just in case i guess...later

i use this simple shell holder:

and you can actually get repeat shots off fairly quickly with a little practice.

The H&R Ultra 20 gauge is a fantastic gun... Accuracy wise it is a tack driver. We see alot of 20 gauges out in Illinois. Plenty of medicine for whitetail's. Everyone I know that own's one rave's about it.

Re: H+R SLUG GUN,20 Ga.?

I have one worked fine for 3 or 4 years then started misfiring.Do a search this is a known problem with these seems to be mostly the 20 gauges. I put a new hammer spring in mine seems to have fixed it. Haven't shot it enough to be sure
