I think the original Ithaca Deerslayer smoothbore barrels were classified as "Improved Cylinder." But I could be wrong. I have a post-855,000 s/n M37 and the fixed choke mikes at .705, a full .024 pts. off from a cylinder choke which is .729. This is between 20 and 25 pts. (thousandths of an inch), making its choke restriction somewhere between a Modified and Improved Modified. Yet it groups Remington Sluggers very well. My barrel is from '68. My brother's M37 Deerslayer was purchased in 1975 and his smoothbore barrel mikes at .715, which is still a little tighter than Improved Cylinder.
