thoughts on a new shotgun scope

I am in the process of redoing my slug gun.I just put a cantilever barrel on and I need a scope. I looked at the new redfield scopes, they seem nice, made by Leupold in usa at a good price. Thinking about 2x7x33 or 3x9x40 which would you go with? Any thoughts on the new redfields? Anyone have one yet?

Dave, go with the 2x7. i have a 4.5 on mine and it works fine, but sometimes i would love that extra power. i bought a nikon for my gun, but gave it to my little cousin for his new gun.

Thanks junior. Did you see the the redfields? Very nice. Camerons has them at a great price. They brought them to our wild game dinner and were displaying them.

Re: thoughts on a new shotgun scope

I would too go with the 2-7. It's more compact, and I can't really see needing the little extra power.

I have a straight 4x on my slug gun. Not because I think it is the best, but because I had it on hand. I could see at times needing a little extra power, but so far I haven't needed it. I normally only hunt with my slug gun where the shots will be close.

The only benifit I could see going with the 3-9 would be a little extra weight to tame the recoil. I have both a cantalevered barrel and an open sighted barrel for my mossberg 500. You can really tell the difference in recoil. The one with the scope is bad. The open sighted barrel is near intolerable. I've only ever shot 3 shots out of it.

Re: thoughts on a new shotgun scope

The 2-7 is a good scope for a slug gun. Don't think you can go wrong with that unless you get some junk name brand that can't handle the recoil. Be careful with the cantilever barrel, i know a couple guys who have had problems with them. Least little bump on the cantilever can move everything.

Re: thoughts on a new shotgun scope

You need one that will standup to the recoil. My friend has the 2 x 7 Redfield and it is a nice scope. As for holding up to the recoil on a shotgun I cannot say.

Since the range of a slug gun is limited to about 100 yards my preference would be to go with a 1 x 4 or a 2 x 7.
