I bought a Taurus raging bull 44 mag this year. Tried shooting doe on the first Saturday and my ears rang for hours after firing three shots.
So what do you guys and gals use for hearing protection. I don't want something that amplifies sound since walking thru leaves would be deafening.
I'm reluctant to wear foam plugs since I won't be able to hear game in front of me as easy. I do not want muffs. I'm thinking of something like a Walkers game ear without amplification but still keeps the high dB cutout.
I have both E.A.R. in the ear electronic protection and Radians electronic ear muffs. Both have voulme/sensitivity controls that you use to control the amplification. Walking on leaves is not deafening, neither is walking on stones.
When you are up to your butt in alligators, it is hard to remember your intent was to drain the swamp. Stay focused!
I've let loose with 44 mags in tree stands where the blast bounced off the tree onto me. Ears rang until the next morning.
Don't recall the make of mine, but I got them 10 years ago before they were even legal to hunt with. The technology has to have gotten better since. Mine have two mics positioned kinda front & back on the muff but I still think I loose some directional ability. However, it is well worth saving your hearing. While I agree you can hear the leaves rustling a bit louder, I've never felt like they give me any real advantage in the woods. I was glad when the PGC legalized them for hunting use.
The only issue I've had with mine is they pick up on that annoying interference pattern given up by your mobile phone as it searches for towers. Just turn your phone off and you should be fine.
