Remington 870 smooth slug barrel

I've got an 18.5" smooth bore slug barrel for my 870, and I'm having a hard time finding rifled slugs that stay consistent with it. Remington Sluggers are doing OK so far out to 50 yards, but after that they're all over the place and I think I'd do just about as well throwing rocks at the deer. Winchesters were even worse, and I went through a couple boxes of slugs my buddy left behind when he moved, can't remember the brand name now but they had transparent casings, and I couldn't even get them on the paper they flew so wild.

For the rest of this year I think I'll stick with the sluggers and just hold myself to <50 yard shots, not that I see many deer further away than that in the brush I usually hunt, but I do have one spot in DE that could possibly present longer shots and I'd like to find a solution less expensive than a rifled barrel and scope. Does anybody have experience with 870 smooth slug barrels and have a suggestion on what worked best for you?

I so miss Clarion and hunting deer with my .270.

Brennekes were the ticket for my 870 smooth bore also.

Re: Remington 870 smooth slug barrel

My experience is about to 65 yards with a good smooth barrel and you might have to try several mfg. rounds to get the best groups. However, I took many deer in IN, MI, NY, OH and PA with a smooth bore single shot 12 ga. from 1967-1996 till I got my Browning 12 bolt action.

Browning sold them a couple of years and I was fortunate enough to get one. I see they are making them again. $999.00. I was offered $2,500 for mine after they were discontinued however, now with the new ones out my used one probably has gone down in price.

The Browning will shoot constant 2" groups at 100 yds. It did today in fact. I haven't tested it any farther than a 100...like you my slug gun hunting area (OHIO) has a limited distance due to heavy cover.

An accurate slug is a very effective deer gun within its range.

Re: Remington 870 smooth slug barrel

To be sure, the 2 deer that I've shot this year have dropped in their tracks, I just wish I could do that from a little bit further away and with a little more confidence that my slug will go where I tell it to. Love the tag allocation system here in DE, hate the shotgun-only restrictions. Guess you just can't win 'em all.

Re: Remington 870 smooth slug barrel

Get a B-Square for the 870 and mount a 1.5 X 5 power scope.
You should be able to extend your range to 100yds.
Try the brennekes>
