for those of you that use a 44 mag for deer which bullet weight and type do you prefer? I am thinking of getting a box of the Hornady flex tip ammo and seeing how my gun likes them and maybe a box of any brand that offers a soft tip not a hollow point. Don't want to blow deer up either I want to be able to eat it after I shoot it without having hair and bullet pieces throughout.
Well if you were a bullet caster I would recommend a LBT 280 gr cast out of wheel weights and water dropped set over a hefty charge of H110. Kills like they were hit with a sledgehammer between the eyes.
I too vote for the lead pill. I like the bullet to be heavy and when they hit,it's like a bowling ball. Had a Marlin one time that it only shot jacketed bullets because of the micro groove rifling. Used a 180 gr and hit a deer 4 times til it fell over. Had jacket seperation when we looked inside.
I don't mind cleaning my gun so I like lead bullets. If I went back to jacketed, I'd use a heavy one. Keep you shots at reasonable ranges and make sure you can hit consistantly.
