14" 30-30 contender barrel

Anyone have experience with this set up?
I have cpl questions
I dnt reload so...can I shoot standard rifle loads 150-170's accurately
& is recoil manageable
Out of a pistol barrel configuration?
And as a hunting load how does 30-30 compare with 45 long colt I have in my
45/410 barrel as a deer round?
Thanks as always

Re: 14" 30-30 contender barrel

I have shot one in 30-30. used reg rifle ammo and it was fun as heck to shoot. We were blasting pie plates out to 100 yards! Recoil was not too bad but I love big guns.

I am sure the 30-30 is gonna be a deer killer!

will hunt for food....

It"s a great round out of a Contender, try the Flex tip ammo, if you want the most out of the Contender, you"re going to have to shoot handloads, a handloader can do things in a 30-30 contender, that the model94 can only dream of.

Re: 14" 30-30 contender barrel

i had one years ago. the neighbor reloaded ammo for it, i could almost touch holes at 100 yards.

handloads were to hot, the scope mounts were to weak, we blew the scope off the gun

never did get a deer with it, they are accurate and the 30-30 is a deer killer...go for it...keep the gun and hand it down to your children, i wish i still had mine.

This.
I handload for ALL my TC handgun rifle caliber barrels. The BEST way to wring out every drop of performance from those "short" barrels.

Re: 14" 30-30 contender barrel

Pretty sure it was an Encore(?) back then, but years ago at our club ranges, a member was shooting his then-new 30-30 and was concerned that it was shooting to nearly the same "point of aim" at 50 yards and 100 yards (scoped, shooting from sandbags), with 150gr Rem. Core Lokts.

I asked him what problem that might present, come deer season. He thought about a bit, then said "Probably none"?

Around the same time frame, once attended a handgun silhouette shoot. Still recall how the guys shooting Encores in cartridges like the 30 Herret, were letting them come back from recoil and drop across their chests, shooting from "prone".

They laid on their backs, using a raised leg/knee for a rest, then let the gun come up and back down, arm over chest.

Re: 14" 30-30 contender barrel

I can tell you my 15" .444 Marlin barrel will jump all over you if you don't know how to control it. I let my brother take her for a spin shooting some HOT 300 grainers and after the second shot, he set the gun down, eyes wide and said, "Yep! That's enough for me!" To this day, he won't shoot it again. I never did find the 30-30 very punishing, even when I first shot one at age 14. I have always been around a lot of handgun shooters and did quite a lot myself so I guess I already knew what to expect? The BIG thing with big bores and high pressure rifle rounds in hand guns is you have to HOLD ON but still allow the gun to recoil or you're gonna get hurt.
