Maybe a silly question...38 +P

Quick question, what is the difference between a .38 special and a .38 +P? Not really sure and was just wondering.

Re: Maybe a silly question...38 +P

Overpressure ammunition, commonly designated as +P or +P+, is small arms ammunition that has been loaded to a higher internal pressure than is standard for ammunition of its caliber (see internal ballistics), but less than the pressures generated by a proof round. This is done typically to produce rounds with a higher muzzle velocity and stopping power, such as ammunition used for defensive purposes. Because of this, +P ammunition is typically found in handgun calibers which might be used for defensive purposes

Make sure the firearm is rated for +P ammo.

If for say you have a 357, you can use 38 +P. Most newer 38 only guns are marked if such ammo can be used. About the only ones I see anymore are snubbies. I have a 38 snubbie, and it's labeled for such use.

MY 9mm is also labeled for +P loads. Not sure if I ever saw a +P 9mm round as they are already a higher pressure round. The 38 has been out for over a hundred years, and some of the older guns aren't able to handle the higher pressures.
