CCW

I just moved down here to Canonsburg, PA from Michigan, and would like to get a CCW. Any suggestions/recommendations on who has the best deals for CCW classes?

Re: CCW

You will need two references. Some counties want local references.

Re: CCW

Really!? So all I need to do is go to the sheriffs office, then I'll be able to carry a concealed weapon. Wow, I wish Michigan was like that, the CCW cost about $280 all said and done.

Thanks guys

True, however the "local" aspect is illegal.

By law, the sheriffs are supposed to follow said law, however..........requiring your references to be local, or having them actually sign the application (Luzerne Co does this) is in violation of the law. There is no law requiring your references to be local.....or sign the application. Of course the Sheriff's will argue this with you.

6109. Licenses

(a) Purpose of license.--A license to carry a firearm shall be for the purpose of carrying a firearm concealed on or about one's person or in a vehicle throughout this Commonwealth.

(b) Place of application.--An individual who is 21 years of age or older may apply to a sheriff for a license to carry a firearm concealed on or about his person or in a vehicle within this Commonwealth. If the applicant is a resident of this Commonwealth, he shall make application with the sheriff of the county in which he resides or, if a resident of a city of the first class, with the chief of police of that city.

(c) Form of application and content.--The application for a license to carry a firearm shall be uniform throughout this Commonwealth and shall be on a form prescribed by the Pennsylvania State Police. The form may contain provisions, not exceeding one page, to assure compliance with this section. Issuing authorities shall use only the application form prescribed by the Pennsylvania State Police. One of the following reasons for obtaining a firearm license shall be set forth in the application: self-defense, employment, hunting and fishing, target shooting, gun collecting or another proper reason. Re: CCW

Here is the link for two sheriff's depts, Bulter and Luzerne County. The applications for the license to carry firearms are in .pdf files.

In the Butler County application, Box #30-references, there is no mention of them having to sign the form.

However, in the Luzerne County application, Bow #29-references, you will notice the addition of "must be signed". Illegal.....and NOT required.

Re: CCW

Alleghany Dept. No mention of references having to sign the application, however.......in the instructions......it says the references must live in PA. Again.......that is an illegal requirement added by the sheriff.

Berks County. Nothing about references having to sign the application, or be residents of PA.

Columbia County. No signing, no required state residency. (By the way, I went to the police academy with this sheriff!)
