block shoot Extra Full chokes

I have a Winchester SXP Black Shadow Field, and my grandfather has an Remington 11-87 that we are looking at getting extra full chokes for block shoots. All the chokes that we looked at are for heavy duty turkey loads. Anybody have any recomendations on which choke would be best for either gun??
Thanks

Re: block shoot Extra Full chokes

Don't know how things are in your area, but around here almost everyone now shoots "custom" block shoot guns. Very few shooters show up with hunting guns equipped with "extra full" choke tubes these days.

Some clubs run two classes: "Stock" shotguns and "custom" shotguns.

I have long questioned how safe some of the customs are, since they have so much choke restriction, that they have to be producing some serious breach pressures. In that regard, we had one blow the bolt, back in November.

Heavy barrel w/internal choke restriction. Not sure what brand action it was, but all that held the bolt in, was the handle bearing against about a 1/4" high x two inch long piece of steel on the rear of the action. The handle sheared that piece of steel off and the bolt came back in the shooter's face.

An aftermarket extra full choke does not automatically mean a tight pattern. Check out all your chokes and see which one patterns best. I had a Mossberg 835 that won 50% of the block shoots I used it in using the factory full choke.

Kicks industries has chokes specifically for block shoots. I highly recommend any choke that they make. They are a great company! Good luck!

Re: block shoot Extra Full chokes

Used that example to explain the current situation in this area, as to block shoot guns. Years ago, most of our shooters were using their hunting guns and finding the choke tube that patterned best with the loads we were using.

Nowadays, at least in these parts, most shooters are using purpose-built guns and most shoot several block shoots per week.

Very few guys show up with their hunting guns anymore, because they can't compete with the purpose-built rigs and their dense patterns.

Re: block shoot Extra Full chokes

I have a 500 mossberg with a .665 undertaker choke. And I do quite well against custom guns. This past Saturday I won two rounds and split one. made $80.00. one month ago I won four rounds at a shoot. I had nothing done to it yet and I may not as long as I keep winning.

I'd rather be judged by twelve than carried by six

may want to also look at lenghtening the forcing cone.

Re: block shoot Extra Full chokes

My dad shoots a kicks choke out of an 870, and it is by far the best choke we have patterned.
