870 Slug Range?

I plan on picking up a 212 savage, but want to put a rifled barrel and scope on my 870 so my dad has a slugger also. What is the effective range of a rifled barrel and factory slugs?

Re: 870 Slug Range?

If you get a candilever barrel and a scope it is a 100 yd gun with open sites 50 to 75 yds

There's hunting and there's hunting with a good dog

Re: 870 Slug Range?

ive taken a deer at just a hair under 125 yards with my heavy contour 23" barrell on my 870. when my new 3x9 goes on it i will see how it groups at 150yds, which im sure it will be fine.

Re: 870 Slug Range?

I've used both 20 and 12 gauged 870's for years and agree with all that has been posted already.

Re: 870 Slug Range?

how about the 870 with a smooth bore. using a rifled slug, and open sights would you get a fairly tight group (2inch) at 75 yards.

i would not hesitate at shooting rifled slugs to 75 yards. im building a scoped smoothbore gun as we speak.

Re: 870 Slug Range?

Your range will depend a lot on what specific slug you are shooting and wether or not the bbl is rifled. Try different brands of slugs to see which groups the best in your gun. I have had very good groups with the cantilevered bbl on the 870. The best slug load in my particular gun was the Remington Copper Sabot slug.

Re: 870 Slug Range?

i have an 870 with the scope mounted to the side of the receiver. http://www.combathunting.com/SCOPE_M...ope_Mount.html with a smooth bore and a rifled choke tube (originally used im. cyl. barrel with almost exact same results). i shoot remington rifled slugs. they group 2.5" at 75 yrs. killed a fair amouont of deer with set up.
