Mossberg 20 gauge for deer?

I got a mossberg 20 gauge 500C pump. If i put a scope on it will this gun kill a deer effectivly out to 100 yards with a slug? It is a smooth barrel. It will take a 3 inch. Is this doable within reason? Never deer hunted with a shotgun before. Any info is great. Thanks!

100 w/ the smoothbore is quite a stretch IMO. I'd imagine accuracy would fall off past 50. You can try and get a rifled barrel for it (can find them used cheap sometimes) or you can get a rifled choke which would at least help. On the cheap you could throw a set of fiberoptic sights on the smoothbore and try a few types of ammo and see what accuracy is like at different ranges.

I have a mossy 20 w rifled barrel, scope, etc. It shoots really well w Hornady STS slugs out to 100 (probably more but never shot farther than that).

Good luck!

I used one in New York with a IC choke tube and Fosters. (cheapo slugs) years ago. It would put every shot on a paper plate at 100 from the bench. Killed two bucks with it at 50 to 75 yards. It will do its part if you do yours.

Re: Mossberg 20 gauge for deer?

I killed my first deer (a button buck in NY state) with a mossberg model 500 youth model in 20 gauge. My accuracy wasn't the greatest with the smoothbore, but it worked fine within 50 yds. I've since purchased a rifled barrel with rifle sights, but to answer your original question, yes, a 20 gauge will definitely kill deer with no problem.

Re: Mossberg 20 gauge for deer?

Ok cool. Few more questions if i may...

Where can i find a rifled barrel and how much do they cost? Same question for the rifled choke?

Do you guys suggest using a low power scope or open sights?

What slugs work best for smoothbore? How bout with rifled barrel if i get one?
