No flies on the 44 Special

Hey folks....I'm a big 44 Mag fan but today I took my first deer with a Ruger SA 44 Special with a 4 5/8 barrel. Big old fat doe. It was about a 60 yard shot standing broadside. The 240 grain XTP went in one side and broke the off shoulder on it's way out. I knew the gun was plenty accurate but didn't think the caliber would have that kind on terminal ballistics. Handloaded 240 grain XTP over 7.5 grain of Unique. WOW....I'm used to the Mag but I like this gun. Pleasant to shoot and didn't blow my eardrums out.

If I'm not hunting or fishing with the kids....I'm somewhere on a Judo mat.

Re: No flies on the 44 Special

Ya don't need a cannon to kill a deer. Congratulations.

I normally carry a .454 Casull. However, I can also shoot .45 Colt's out of it. I shot a deer with that 255 grain semi-wadcutter at around 850 fps and ya know, that deer was just as dead as the ones I shot with the 300 grain JSP's at 1500 out of the Casull case.

The deer don't care....use what works for you.

And using the Specials in the Magnum is a heck of alot easier on your hands, wrists, and ears. I'd call it a Win-Win.

Don't let the name fool Ya!

Re: No flies on the 44 Special

The first hangun I ever shot was a 44 Mag. I've been in love with it since. I have not "drawn blood" with mine yet,but someday. I was thinking that on paper, the "special" looks to be plenty, especially when you consider that guys use 357's.Its all about knowing your limits. Congrats on the deer.

Re: No flies on the 44 Special

Thanks Guys...I spend a lot of time in the off season shooting this pistol loaded with hand poured 240 grain TL bullets. All of that is low velocity stuff. For the season I rolled my own hunting loads using the XTP's. While my 44 Mag difinately has more "pop" the 44 Special is just plain easier to carry as it has a shorter barrel and it's super accurate. This season I made a conscious decision to leave the rifle and the mag at home...there were days I questioned that decision....but it paid off in the end. I look at pistols like I look at bows....anything you take with either is a trophy.
It's addictive, as I'll be hunting with the pistol again next year.

If I'm not hunting or fishing with the kids....I'm somewhere on a Judo mat.

Re: No flies on the 44 Special

The 44 Special has always been a great hunting cartridge. I have some friends who only hunt with revolvers and longbows. They say they rarely shoot over 30 yards at game although all are excellent shots. The .357 Magnum and the 44 Special are their primary calibers.

Re: No flies on the 44 Special

Judoka,

Welcome to the 44 special club! My 44 mag has not seen a day of hunting in 4 years now. I too shot a big fat doe with my S&W 696 back in 2008 with 240 hard cast LSWC over a max load of 2400. Sixty yards is a great shot. Mine was only at 28.

Nothing carries better than an L frame in the woods! I have an Model 27 .357 that I'm trying to blood, but even that N frame doesn't pack as good as the L.

Re: No flies on the 44 Special

Those of you who do load and shoot the 250 Keith....does anyone know if I can get away with tumble lubing these or should I just use regular lube? I tumble lube 200 grain cast bullets from a Lee die and don't have a problem with them. Wondering if I could get away with it with the Keiths? Tumble lubing is just so much easier and IMO less of a mess.
