Slug barrel on Mossberg 835

Got into a situation that is basically Nirvana for hunting Ohio. I own neither a slug gun nor an inline.

I was thinking of getting a slug barrel for my Mossberg 835, as the shorter term (not this year) and less expensive first step and follow that up with a T/C inline when I can casually sneak this in without Mrs. DFA putting a tag on my own carcass!

Anyone with thoughts/pros/cons/suggestions about adding a slug barrel for the 835 to the lineup then following up with an inline?

A closed mind keeps the truth out

Your local Gander Mountain should have a few slug barrels for you 835 for fairly cheap. Its already drilled and tapped so all you'll need is a weaver #410 base, rings and a stout ler scope in the 1-4 or 2-7 power range. Word of advice...make sure your barrel nut is tight. Never met a slug gun that didn't shoot better when the barrel is SNUG. Hand tighten, then with the gun empty of course, put the butt of the gun on the floor and put your weight on the barrel and give the barrel retention a few more clicks (as hand tight as possible).

Since I don't use a scope for turkey, I use a cantalevered barrel with a permanently mounted scope, which makes it so convenient for me to change between a deer gun & a turkey gun. I also 2nd what mjy said previously. Do what he suggested and get that barrel TIGHT! If you do this, the scope will not be far off when you change to the rifled barrel.

Re: Slug barrel on Mossberg 835

I have a mossy 835 with the cantalevered scope base on it and it shoots amazing at 100 yds ! Shoots 2 3/4 hornady sst bulles in a consistant 1 1/2 groups . Best thing you can do though when you are to mount your scope is to have your rings lapped . It will save you alot of money on slugs thinking your scope is bad or loose . Trust me !!
