Sabot or Slug ?

What would happen if I fire a traditional "rifled slug" thru a rifled barrel? Mostly a question of accuracy not so much barrel damage. I bought a 5 pack of 20 ga sabots at [email protected]#t today and was surprised at the difference in price between old fashioned slugs and sabots.

Slugs will shoot out of a fully rifled barrel...but generally NOT TOO WELL. As far as risking damage?...nope on that either. You will however have a heck of a time getting all the lead fowling out of the rifling that was stripped off the slug as it bounces down the barrel and comes into contact with the lands and grooves.

+1

However I did have decent luck with Winchester slugs ot to 75 yards, but you'l almost always do better with sabots.

Had a groups like this at 75 yards except all 3 were touching :

Re: Sabot or Slug ?

slugs are good out to 75 yds. which is longer than most of my shots at deer. i elect to save my money and buy slugs and kill deer with them. i do shot a smooth bore though with a rifled choke.

Re: Sabot or Slug ?

The downside is lead fouling in the rifling. If you don't have a problem with cleaning that out then you'll probably be fine.

You take one or two shots a year. Spend the money and get the most accurate round.

I have found the sabot slugs to be very accurate in my rifled SG. Yes they are more expensive but I will spend an extra $6.00 or $8.00 a box for the accuracy.

Re: Sabot or Slug ?

Slugs will shootb through rifled barrels, just not as well. But good enough for most slug hunters.

I can remember in the early 90's we were selling Winchester slugs for $1.99 for a box of five. Wow I should have bought 100 cases. Tom.

Re: Sabot or Slug ?

I'm sort of like an old hound with a favorite bone when I get a thought... just keep chewin' on it and rolling it over and chewin'.... so... about slugs or sabots... What you guys said about "leading up the groves" with those soft lead slugs makes sense. Can someone offer an opinion about the solid copper slugs I see for sale in Dunham's?

Re: Sabot or Slug ?

Put a cantilever barrel on my slug gun over the summer. Will be sighting in soon. I plan on using lead rifled slugs to get me on paper, then use copper sabots for the last 2 or 3 shots. For $3.00 a round, I'd rather get most of my sighting in done with cheap lead slugs.

Re: Sabot or Slug ?

buy sabots and make your shot count, if your huntin brush just put the smooth bore on and you will will be good for 50yds or so with regular slugs.
