I can attest to crappy or target loads don’t cycle well. When I got my sbe2 I took it clay shooting had issues with cheapie estate loads. Simple solution in clays where you can only shoot two shells is to load the next shell under the first after closing the action. Never fails to load the second shell.
That being said the SbE2 is not meant to to be a clays gun. I’ve never had an issue dove hunting with any 1 oz 7.5 shells or higher which is the least I would ever use for any game birds.

I've had one since they first came out. Took it completely apart(recoil tube included) cleaned all the heavy grease off it, lightly lubed with a high quality oil, put it back together. Followed the instructions on "breaking it in" to a T, and have never had one issue with it. It'll cycle anything you drop in it. I'd bet a large portion of the ones that don't cycle just need a good disassembly and cleaning, and a light lube with a good oil before reassembly, and they would run just fine.

I have an SBE 1. I shoot trap, 5 Stand and Sporting Clays with it before waterfowl season. I usually use factory 1 1/8 oz. loads but I have used 1 oz. reloads. I do not remember one failure to function.

It does have a Sure Cycle recoil spring and tube.
