16 gauge shells

I have an old finicky Ithaca 16 gauge that hates federal ammo. Any suggestions on a good and decently priced shell?

You might want to check (or have checked by a gunsmith) the carrier. I have lots of 37's and run Federal ammo no problem. I did have a feeding and ejection problem with all ammo on one of my 37's, and the carrier was the problem.

Ithaca 37 or one of the SxS variants (NID, Flues, etc.).

If an Ithaca 37, it's not uncommon for the older guns to have an issue extracting the cheap steel based hulls manufactured today. Polishing the chamber can help sometimes. I'd try a few other brands like Fiocchi, Herters, Remington before looking for a problem with the gun itself.

I have an old 870 that the only shells it will eject are Remingtons and Fiocchi. # 5's in the Fiocchi are a great pheasant load. Plus you can buy them at a decent price. I bought a case last year for a $100. I reload the 16 for waterfowl and only use the Cheddite hulls. But use them in a different gun.

My Sweet Sixteen Auto-5 doesn't like the Federals either, and after some measuring against other brands that cycled without issue, we came to the conclusion that the spent hull was slightly longer than the other brands we were shooting that day, thus catching on the way out.

Now, I generally buy low brass Remington game load 8's from Academy Sports, and haven't had a problem with them. IIRC, they're about $7 a box, with free shipping over $25, so I generally buy four boxes per order.

Please define "hates".

Doesn't feed? Doesn't eject? Doesn't pattern?

My Dad has a 37 that he bought after WW2 and it works flawless no matter what we use from low brass to slugs.
