Question

maybe someone can answer this,
i have a 44 mag pistol and a 44-40 rifle.
ammo looks the same, are they?

They are different rounds. The 44-40 meant .44 caliber and 40 grains of black powder. New loads in the 44-40 use modern powder but that is just where it came from. The .44 mag is a little shorter and not a rimed cartridge. They are not compatible with each other.

my dad passed away last year and ive never had these guns before .
i just started looking at them and seen the simularities.

what do you mean by rimmed?
both shells have primers.
both shells are the same length

No they are not the same length. The .44 mag case length is 1.285 and the 44-40 is 1.305. By a rimmed cartridge I mean that the 44-40 does not have a groove after the rim. It is straight walled where as the 44 mag has a cut groove for the extractor. They are not innerchangable!

44-40 Win uses a .427 or .428 bullet and runs at about 10,000 psi 44 Rem mag uses .429 or.430 and is I believe around the mid 30,000's on pressure.

44-40 brass is also .020 longer than the Mag and tapers .026 from the head to the mouth.

As has already been said, don't do it!

thanks guys for your help, upon further inspection i did notice the diference in the casings. goes to show your never too old too learn!
