Confusion about carry laws

I just filled out my application for concealed carry at the sherries office. I thought they just ran a pics check like they do when you buy a firearm. I obviously have no problems buying firearms. I actually went straight from my dealer after picking up my 327 Fed LCR. What more does it entail that they just don't issue it once they run the pics check like at the dealer when you buy a gun. I know I had to put down 2 references but do they really call them and ask them if your not a yo-yo and going to kill someone. I guess is it possible that you can be denied your carry permit even though you can buy the gun. This just seems a little odd to me if you could be denied to carry even though you can buy. I'm sorry if this seems like a simple question but with the way this world is heading I want to be able to protect my family if need be.

16 years and counting. Welcome to the life of a Buffalo Bills fan!

There is no consistency between counties as to how the permits are handled. Each sheriff decides how it is done.
Berks county, fill out the application and walk out with a permit in 30 min.
bad primer and whil e kioti like this.

I think it depends on the sheriff how fast it's approved similar to antlerless tags some are faster than others.
Mine took 35 days initially, renewal took about 2 weeks. Delaware county.

There is discussion in congress to make CC permits reciprocal in other states......e.g. if you have CCDW permit in Texas it will be recognized in NY.. and the rest of the states.....

When getting my permit, I had it mailed to me after a week or so.

All of my guy friends had the same experience.

My wife was issued hers on the spot. Her female friend also got it on the spot.

Small sample size, but strange nonetheless.

Yup, depends on the county. Some do a little more in depth check than just PICS. I believe they can also deny you based on "poor character" which is rather arbitrary but I suppose is meant to keep a "known trouble maker" without a prohibited offense from being allowed to carry.

Just got my renewal form in the mail today for Allegheny Co. According to the instructions, all I gotta do is bring it down to sheriff's office, pay the $20,get my photo taken, and leave with my new permit 5-10 minutes later!

Not sure when it was changed in Allegheny County, I got mine 3 years ago and had to fill out the application and send it in. They then sent you a postcard type letter saying you were approved and you had to take that with you to the Sheriffs Office.
My wife just got hers , took the app down paid the 20 bucks and had her permit.
Don't count on the 5-10 minute wait , she was there for about 90 minutes

I don't know anyone that had references contacted. You can buy a gun and be denied a LTCF for owing money on a parking ticket. If you owe the government money you lose.On a lighter note Allegheny county got with the satellite program for issuing a LTCF.Now I won't have to pay to park.Parking isn't cheap in Pittsburgh.

Bob Seger,till it shines.
