slugs in a full choke

This has probably been asked many a time but hear goes again. Can you shoot slugs through a full choke smooth bored 12 ga without damaging the barrel or yourself?

The problem is that I don't know what I don't know.

Re: slugs in a full choke

The old Foster-style slugs will squeeze down enough to work in a full choke but as far as accuracy goes, you might get 6 inches at 100 or 2 feet at 100.

The slugs are made to shoot through a full bore barrel, .735 or thereabouts so it is generally best (and safest) to shoot them through a Cylinder bore.

Re: slugs in a full choke

I shot foster style slugs from my 20 gauge with a fixed full choke with no problems at all. Accuracy was good enough to hunt in the woods if that helps at all.

My brother shot a nice 8 point buck with it.

Re: slugs in a full choke

fixed chokes seem to handel anything that goes through them. However, interchangeble chokes dont. Call the gun manufacturer and ask them if its not in the manuel. I wouldnt do it just to be safe. I put a slug through the modified choke in my mossberg 20 ga and now I cant get the choke out. The gun still shoots ok but I think the slug damaged the choke threads a little.

Re: slugs in a full choke

Its a fixed full choke. Seeing as the barrel has no rifleing would I need to shoot rifled slugs to get better accuracy? Who makes "foster-style" slugs?

The problem is that I don't know what I don't know.

Re: slugs in a full choke

Most full gauge dia slugs are foster style. The rifleing on them does very little actually. The shoot the way they do mostly because they are heavy in the front, and light in the rear. Sort of like a badmitten birdy.

That's what I have seen from my Mossberg 500 ABR. I got a 30 inch full choke barrel. It's great for the block shoots but terrible with slugs!
