Hunting With a .22 Revolver

Embarking on a new experience this year - hunting with a .22 revolver. Will be taking it out for small game and small predator/varmits.

What is your recommendation for which ammo to use? I have both .22LR and .22 Mag cylinders.

I am aware of hollow point ammo. Is there any equivalent to Core-Lok in a 22? Something that really "mushrooms" or fragments.

Should I be looking for higher velocity rounds?

What brand have you found performs well?

Re: Hunting With a .22 Revolver

I have used my old H & R with solids for years, no problems with the .22 LR.

Re: Hunting With a .22 Revolver

Since you have both lr and mag cylinder I'm guessing you have either a single six or a rough rider?

If you have a single six you can sight in for any ammo. With the rough rider you can not. I have a rought rider, and it shoots perfect with winchester gray box 22's. Not so much with the mag cylinder. I haven't tried any different loads out of it though.

I have found with small game the ranges are so short using open sights the mag isn't worth it. Anything bigger than tree rats and rabbits I would use mags.

You will just have to shoot a bunch of different ones and see which shoots best.

Re: Hunting With a .22 Revolver

I had a single six years ago and the only thing that shot worth a darn was mags.

If I were you, just buy some different ammo and see what it likes. I found out that my SS liked the CCI SP mags.

Remember, shoot straight and shoot often.

Try the hornady V-max 22 mags. I believe it's a 30-35 gr bullet.

Re: Hunting With a .22 Revolver

Since my gun has fixed sights I looked for a load that shot to point of aim, and not the best group. I tried about 6 different lr loads and the winchester gray box was by far the best in my gun. Both group size and point of aim. My marlin rifle doesn't like them much.

I have to do the same with mags, but haven't done so yet.

One thing I can tell you for sure....Hunting small game with a revolver is a lot of fun. To me it's not very productive. I tend to miss a lot. If you decide to do it don't get discoraged. Try, try again.

Re: Hunting With a .22 Revolver

I've been hunting with my S&W mod 17 for years, with open sights. The 40 grain solid Rem work good, from rats to rabbits. accuracy with the pistol and shot placement is way more significant than ammo, or ammo accuracy!
