Re: factory loads for a 44 magnum

The only factory load I've ever killed anything with was Speer's 270 grain gold dot. I found that bullet too hard for deer, as it failed to expand much. I tried for a few years to score a bear with that load, but never had any luck so can't comment.

I've gone to 240 & 250 grain LSWCs handloads for all my hunting with 44s and find that even then they don't expand, they cut such clean holes that deer bleed profusely if hit in the heart / lung area.

Big LSWC's rule

Re: factory loads for a 44 magnum

Hornady XTP loads are the only thing my family will use. I didn't have the opportunity to get a deer before I sold my 44, but my mom uses them in her Ruger leaver and they are deadly on deer. She's gotten 5 or 6 so far with it. None have run far.

Remember, shoot straight and shoot often.

Speer GOLD DOT... Flipped a deer almost over at 30 yards. or the 240 or 300 GR Hornady XTP if you reload

Re: factory loads for a 44 magnum

I shoot American Eagle 240 grain JHP. I switched to them after I bought 2 boxes of Hornady XTP's that had the primers set a little low and they wouldn't fire out of my .44
I have had good luck with the American Eagle (even though it's a cheaper ammo).

Re: factory loads for a 44 magnum

The factory XTP 200gr loads I bought a few years ago, duplicated my own hand loads using that bullet. Killed two deer with my loads in a M629, so I know they work well on deer.

Bought a minty, used M92 clone in 44 mag while at camp one summer, didn't have anything along to try it with, so bought a few boxes of Hornady XTP ammo and gave it a whirl. When I later shot some of my own ammo in it, exact same results in accuracy.

Never got to drop a deer with it before I sold it, but would've expected it to perform well.

Re: factory loads for a 44 magnum

I use Winchester USA white box(50 rounds a box) 240 grain flat nose rounds in my H&R single shot carbine and my Dan Wesson revolver. Both very accurate and have gotten deer no problem. They don`t really mushroom though. I shoot them double lung. They run a little bit and then fall over.

Re: factory loads for a 44 magnum

While not factory, I've taken several deer with handloaded Hornady XTP's. Very satisfied with the results.

I was out at the range this morning, shooting some 240's through my T/C Contender and some 200's through by Super Blackhawk.
