Last year I bought a Marlin in .44 Mag. Got a box of new ammo and a box of commercial reloads. Enjoyed shooting it and shot thru all my ammo before and during deer season.
Went to buy more ammo this week and had sticker shock!
Can anyone tell me why the price of .44 Mag Rem has more than doubled in price?

When I bought a 44 about 12 years ago I could get a box of 50 cheap UMC's for around 25-30 bucks. I didn't even like paying that much since I shot about a box a weekend so I started reloading. BIG cost savings. I started buying bullets in bulk, and the price went down even more. Then I started casting my own bullets.
Now I use a 357 with cast bullets for practice. Once I got the brass the most expensive part is the primer as I got the powder for free. Now when I go to the range with a friend or two I let them bang away with it as the ammo cost me almost nothing but my time to load.
Once your set up to load 44Mag costs $44 to $52 per 100 if you buy new brass and $21 to $25 per 100 if you have brass. Plus your time. Quite a savings over store bought at $62 per 100. (1000 bulk price)
Gander Mt. online has Winchester 240 gr,JSP,44 mag for $29.99,with free shipping. This is the lowest I've seen it for.
Good price but ... Free shipping on ammo with hazmat and all?? Edit> Looked up the regs on shipping ammo, UPS Ground OK no Hazmat requirements if under a certain weight. Primers and powder do require Hazmat.
