Re: Scope for .44 mag
I've had great luck with Leupold, Burris, and Nikon scopes on my handguns. My longer barreled FA 454 wears a fixed 2x Leupold. My T/C Encore 454 wears a fixed 2x Burris. Both of those scopes have survived many heavy loads of 454. My only 44, a 6" S&W 629, wears a fixed Burris 2x. I have a custom SSK 15" Encore barrel in 338 Win Mag that wears a Leupold 2.5x8. It's been on there for years in JD Jones' T'SOB mount without a hitch. Some of my other handgun variables that I really like are Burris' 2x7 and 3x9 (the 3x9 sits on a 15" T/C 223 and takes whistle pigs out to 250 yards when I do my part...), and Nikon's 1.5x4.5 and 2.5x8.
As with any optics, you get what you pay for... If you're going to drop close to a grand on a quality handgun, do right by yourself and get a quality scope.
For me personally, I like a fixed low powered scope on my revolvers and short barreled handgun cartridge fed single shots. I'm not usually shooting them at long ranges, and I like ease of sight acquisition of the 2x. I also think they are a little sturdier on he heavy recoilers than the variable scopes (although that Leupold 2.5x8 has done well on the SSK 338 Win Mag...).
Have fun with the research and shopping process!
