Shotgun slug shooting question

My daughter is going to college in NY state and won't be able to come home for PA's deer season this year. Instead, she's going to hunt at the home of one of her professors in upstate NY.

The county they're hunting in is shotgun-only, which raises several questions for me since I've only ever hunted with a rifle and, consequently, have never shot slugs from a shotgun.

Q: I have an older 12 ga. SxS LaFever that she could use. Setting aside accuracy for a moment, is there any reason she couldn't use this gun with slugs? It doesn't have Damascus barrels or anything like that and I shoot modern (BB) ammo through it all the time.

Q: I have a 12 ga. CZ O/U that's only a couple of years old. How do you think this gun would serve her with slugs?

Q: If she did use the CZ, should I remove the choke tubes from it to shoot slugs? Or is there a certain choke that I should have in to shoot slugs?

Obviously, I'm out of my depth here as it relates to shooting slugs. Any insight you folks can provide would be much appreciated.

Re: Shotgun slug shooting question

I would use the newer gun and use modified choke tubes.I also live in a shotgun only state, and I used Remington or Brenneke slugs..I have shot deer at 80-90 yards , have seen clean kills a little farther out than that..If I go to PA bear hunting I am going to use my 20 gauge with slugs, and leave the rifle at camp..A shotgun will kill any deer within 120 yards, easy....

Re: Shotgun slug shooting question

leave the LaFever home. The CZ with the two most open chokes will be fine. I use Federal truball ammo in my smooth bore and out to 80 yards its awesome. That ammo is really impressive.

will hunt for food....

Give her a heating pad for her shoulder - cause the first couple of kicks from a 12ga sluggun is gonna leave a mark...

Re: Shotgun slug shooting question

Absolutely agree on that hearing pad! I was never so glad as when my area of NY legalized rifles 10 years ago. Slugs have made more people into flinchers than anything ever invented.

I would serious look into a semi-auto 20 gauge for your daughter. My fiancÚ used my 1100 when we still had to use shotguns.

Re: Shotgun slug shooting question

Thanks for the tips, guys. That's all good info. At least I know the CZ can be a fallback if I can't lay my hands on something lighter in the meantime.

I appreciate the help!

Re: Shotgun slug shooting question

I think I saw where you can get reduced recoil slugs that are suppose to be accurate..Maybe it would be better to get those for the young lady?

Re: Shotgun slug shooting question

More good info. 45% less felt recoil is pretty significant.

I knew I came to the right place for advice! Thanks again to all who chimed in.
