Ithaca model 37 barrel?

I have an Ithaca M37 featherlight with a 28" full choke barrel I'm wondering if they made these guns with modified or improved cylinder choke barrels as well. I'd like to find one of each to make my 37 a little more versatile. My serial# is 660xxx-4. I'm pretty sure by serial # is was made in 1957

Re: Ithaca model 37 barrel?

its not good news .but not impossible.
yes they made guns with everything from open cly-0 to full-4
with m37s up until SN#855xxx (1963)each barrel was hand fitted to each receiver.Thats why the gun carries SN on both the barrel and the receiver.
after 63 the barrels became interchangeable.

now if you can find a pre855xxx barrel with a SN on it you can send it to a reputable gunsmith and have it fitted to your gun.
once fitted it can only be used on that gun evermore

Re: Ithaca model 37 barrel?

I have a Ithaca Mod.37 that I bought with a modified barrel.
To get a full choke barrel for it I had to send the action back to the factory and they fit it with a full choke barrel.
After reading your post I check the serial# and saw the both barrels had the same serial#

Re: Ithaca model 37 barrel?

for a long time the factory had extra barrels or the ability to produce the older style barrels pre SN#855

theres been several bankruptcy, company sales and factory relocations between the barrel reconfigurations in 63 and now
I'm not sure if the new Sandusky ohio plant even has the old style barrel anymore.

that being said if you found a NOS preSN#855 barrel it would still need to be fitted by a gunsmith

Re: Ithaca model 37 barrel?

Why don't you send it out and have choke tubes installed. The cost would be close to what you may have to pay for two barrels.

There are two ways to be fooled. One is to believe what isn't true; the other is to refuse to believe what is true.

Re: Ithaca model 37 barrel?

Hey guys thanks for the info. I think I will just keep this 37 like it is and look for other ones with different choked barrels. I really don't want to alter the barrel by having choke tubes installed

that's what I do
welcome to the addiction
beware of the 37 T's S's R's as well as the deluxe's for they can be consuming.
if you can find an old barrel with a polychoke on it you may get the best of all worlds.
if you can stand shooting one that is
