The Old Days hunting with Foster slugs in shotguns

you just never knew where the slug was going to hit when your small game shotgun turned into your deer gun.. I had a friend that barrowed a pump shotgun to hunt buck with it back in 1963. He aimed for the shoulder and killed the buck dead right there... Only negative side is while he aimed for the shoulder he hit the buck right in the head and blew a portion of the rack off.. I had similar experiences with a Model 37 Ithaca cylinder choke slug barrel...the barrel must be only about 20 inches long.. I think it's for shooting down hallways!!! I got the deer but not where I aimed at the deer..Never used it again and now I use it for coyotes from tree stands and # 4 buckshot.. Slug guns have come a long way since the old days... Probably was even worse when hunters use PUNKIN BALLS. Some people use to call Fosters PUNKIN Balls but as you all know they are not.. PUNKIN balls are actually a lead ball...

By the way I do own a Mossberg 20 gauge slug gun... That thing shoots outstanding at 50 yards.. I know I can do better with rifled slugs but it does shoot the Rem Foster accurate.. I just use it now and then if I get that urge to hunt with a shotgun for deer..

Matching the slug to the gun was the key to shooting foster slugs through smooth bore shotguns.
Some guns just didn't shoot anything well, but most guns equipped with rifle sights were very capable keeping all rounds in a 5" circle at 75yd. Just took some experimenting.

Re: The Old Days hunting with Foster slugs in shotguns

I have a Model 37 with a slug barrel. Mine shoots pretty good. If I missed something the problem was me not the gun.

There are two ways to be fooled. One is to believe what isn't true; the other is to refuse to believe what is true.
