.44 magnum bullet for bears

I'm looking for a .44 magnum bullet probably one of the hornady xtp bullets that I could shoot a bear and a deer with. I've been a fan of the accuracy of the xtp so I want to stick with them. The question is which weight do I want to use so that I get adequate penetration on a bear as well as still having expansion on a deer?

Hope you guys understand my question.

gun is a revolver with a 4 inch barrel.

Re: .44 magnum bullet for bears

are you shooting it out of a rifle or revolver? I'd go with the 240 grain for deer and the 300 grain for bear (out of a revolver). Sometimes there's no free lunch. If you are using a rifle, I'd use the 300 for both.

I've killed 3 deer with the 240 gr XTP, and they worked great. I don't see any reason they wouldn't perform well on a black bear.

Alrighty then!

I've killed many deer and one bear with the 240 gr. XTP. It performed well on both. Plenty of penetration. I use them in a revolver and a 10" contender. I have used the XTPs in various calibers and they all seem to do well.

I have also taken several deer with the 240 grain XTP fired through a 9 1/2" Super Redhawk. I've carried the same load for bear too, although I never had the chance to pull the trigger on a bear.

I do have a 300 grain XTP load for the SRH, but as of yet, I have not shot them this year.

Re: .44 magnum bullet for bears

I've loaded the 200gr XTP for my 6" M629 and had good results on deer with it, but would lean towards the 240gr version for bear.

Have so far beem impressed with the XTP's accuracy and terminal ballistics.

My opinion, big difference in a 100-140lb deer and bears that will far exceed that body weight.

Re: .44 magnum bullet for bears

Back in the early 1990's I killed a 180 pound wild boar with my S&W M629 Classic 5". I used a handloaded Hornady 240gr. XTP in front of a stiff load of H110 powder. Performance was outstanding. It penetrated well and the recovered bullet was a perfect mushroom. I have since worked up a load with the 300gr XTP.IMO either bullet would do a good job.

Re: .44 magnum bullet for bears

I've used both 270 grain gold dots and 240 hard cast LSWC's on whitetail with success, but the 270 GDs didn't really expand. I was going to try 250 Keith style LSWC from leadhead on bear this year, but health issues a have sidelined me. Maybe next year.
