Any place where a metal part contacts another metal part, while moving, should be very lightly lubricated.
I would use a non-liquid lube on a shotgun of which there are many out there....white lithium grease, as used in the automotive industry, has worked well for me and is not terribly expensive...another overlooked lube is the old Outers liquid graphite which does not tend to run....I use it on my press rams....
Like the old Brylcreem commercials, a little dab'll do ya....
Liquid lubes tend to migrate and not last as long as solid lubes....I use them mostly on pistol slides/rails where solid grease is not desireable...
