.44 Mag for Deer...Best Factory Load ?

How about some opinions on the best .44 Mag. factory load for deer? I plan to use a S&W 629 6" at some point in the future. No scope as of yet.

Any load for medium game you get to shoot accurately will do just fine for deer. The days of over-hard lead and minimal to no expansion are pretty much over. With the diameter of the .44, expansion is almost an afterthought anyways but more of a bonus imo.

Re: .44 Mag for Deer...Best Factory Load ?

My brother and I got the itch to hunt with hand guns a few years ago. I decided to go the reloading route, with some Nosler 240 HP. I took a doe with a near max powder charge out of my scoped black hawk hunter. She went about 60 yards and piled up with a boiler room shot.

My brother on the other hand took his buck opening day with the red box american eagle 240 HP box number AA44E. With an 8 inch I believe 629. Open sights. He was aiming for a lung shot but hit him in the shoulder and dropped him in his tracks. Took both shoulders out and was under the hide on the far side. I was very impressed.

When we were shooting at the range, myself load testing. Scoped at 100 yards I was keeping a 3 inch group with my 6x scope and he was 4-5 inches open sights at 50 yards. We were shooting off bags.

I have to say its nice having both arms free the walk through the woods. Good luck.

On a side note. Most 44 mags I have found don't have the proper elevation adjustments to handle 300 gn bullets past 50 yards. You'll need a taller front sight post.

Also I did some later testing with factory ammo because I was impressed with the devastation that AE bullet did to my brothers buck. My Ruger didn't like the AE ammo, it shot ok with winchester white box 240 JSP box number Q4240, but did not like the fast 180 JSP from Remington. Box number L44MG7.

Good luck with your venture.

Go get the Honrnady XTP ammo. Shoots great out of every gun I've seen it in and is great on deer. My mom had trouble the first few years she had her Ruger 77/44. She would hit them and not get any blood trail. We found hair, and one I found dead two days later 150yrds away with a double lung. Now that she switched Stevie Wonder could find them after she shoots.

Remember, shoot straight and shoot often.
Good... Bad... I'm the guy with the gun.

My H&R Hand rifle carbine with an 18 1/2 inch barrel and Dan Wesson revolver with a 10 inch barrel both live the Winchester white box 240sp rounds. Not the fastest rounds but vet accurate and effective. Both shot with open sights.

Sounds like 240gr. Is the way to go. Then. Thanks for the knowledgeable replies. I appreciate it. Have a family member that has had success with a .357 but .44 mag is new to me.

I have no experience with a pistol but I shoot the 240 xtp's out of a couple muzzleloaders and they perform very well on deer.
