Into the night

Fishing after dark always feels so mysterious and sneaky to me, it also frustrates me at times. Even after you've paid your dues with tangles and learning to minimize them, countless hours spent in the dark with no touches to just a couple of bumps and no feesh, and all the other things that you need to figure out about fishing after dark. No matter how long you've been doing it you still get tangles, knots in your flylines, and streamers in the trees and bushes. One of the most important things I've figured out is you have to hang tough and push through those fishless/bumpless hours/nights. I started 1/2 an hour before dark and nothing really happened until 10:30 or so. Four bumps, two on back to back casts, and I thought sure this was the start of something good, an hour later and "nothing". At this point its easy to feel dejected and leave, but these are the times you have to hang tough and keep on keeping on. Just before midnight after a few color and size changes the 5th bump was a slam and it was on So here's to those times when things come together, you don't loose the fish, and you put one in the net after dark...

Used to catch stripers in the back bays behind Wildwood at night.
Now there's too much boat traffic even at night to bother.

My favorite is overnight tuna chunking.
BIG sky at 2AM 75 miles out. To say it's peaceful and humbling is an understatement.
