Flys for smallmouth

What are some good flys for summertime smallmouth fishing?

Tried some poppers and streamers but had no luck.

Re: Flys for smallmouth

Do you tie?

Bead head black wooly buggers #4 long shank
with lead wire wrapped down the length of the shank and flashabou in the tail really did the trick. Cast them slightly cross current and upstream and it dead drift and just strip in the slack. Any pause in the drift, set the hook.

Really no luck with the fly poppers? I got a decent amount this summer on them including some big boys up to 19".

Wampire - going harder, longer and deeper since 1984.

Re: Flys for smallmouth

I use 3 basic patterns:

1. woolhead/rabbit strip sculpins in black, blonde, and brown (usually sculin brown which is an olive brown)
2. reverse poppers (sneaky petes, aka sliders) with long tails of marabou, saddle hackles, and krystal flash. They float and dive.
3. streamers made of white synthetic material. I color the synthetic material with felt tip pens to represent different types of forage fish,
