Dace Fly?

Anyone use any vairation of a black nose dace fly for trout? I know myself and plenty of people in PA use live dace for trout. Tied one on this weekend had a lot of looks but no takers.

Re: Dace Fly?

It was one of the first flies I learned to tie 35+ years ago. At the time I thought the name was Black Nosed Ace. I now tie my black nose dace, and most of my other bucktail patterns, thunder creek style. I also tie some black nose dace streamer's using synthetic wings. I have also tied them with a olive, gray, and tan wing in place of the brown. One key element that I have noticed on live dace is how dominant the black lateral line is, yet most black nose dace patterns I see the black stripe is very subdued.

Good luck, Tony

Re: Dace Fly?

I tie a few. Easiest is a brown bugger but stack the tail coloration of marabou.

white on bottome, small flash, then black, a little flash, then brown on top.

I also tie one with coyote fur

tie in white and black barbell eyes, wrap hook with black chenille, white fur on the bottom, brown fur on top.

That bad bow moves like crazy.

Re: Dace Fly?

I have tied some and use them occasionally. Have caught some trout with them but no spectacular quantities.
