I was wondering what flies you will be using for the opener I've always use a brown or black wolly bugger but want to try something different this year.

Re: What flies to use

We always go to a brook trout stream the first day so it usually doesn't matter too awful much.

I start off now with a Caribou Muddler with a bronze bead head. They really go nuts for it. It is not the traditional "bright" color for brookies but they really smash it.

Before that was my go to on the first day, it was a chartreuse and white Clouser with red barbell eyes. I have also used various colors of Bunny Leeches, Honey Bugs, PA Worms, and Micro Flashes with great success.

Re: What flies to use

Try a WHITE Wooly Bugger. That might sound like a joke, but it's not. For some reason fresh stockies often go crazy for white streamers.

Olive wooly bugger with a gold bead to start, once that fizzles out i try egg patterns, san juan worms, anything with color will usually fool a stockie.

If your fishing over rainbows use eggs patterns. Its always the first fly I tie on for fresh stocked rainbows.

Yeah, egg flies and other bright flies like green weenies are usually good for stockies. I almost always start with hares ear nymph.
