Watkins Glen DIY

Anyone ever do any fly fishing near Watkins Glen? If so, any advice on streams?

Re: Watkins Glen DIY

Thanks. I printed the maps marked with public fishing areas on it yesterday. Didn't know if they were any smaller streams in the area.

Re: Watkins Glen DIY

I am going to head up there this summer and fish some deep water lakers. I wasn't sure if there were any small brookie streams in the area for that trip. Planning on heading back up in the fall to check out the leaves. My springs are too full of fishing the Penns and Pine to go up there.

Re: Watkins Glen DIY

Catherine Creek is known for its lake run fishery.

I don't know for sure, but I'm guessing it wouldn't be much good at this time of year.

I've seen very heavy channelization of that stream after a flood. It looked pretty ditch-like.

Re: Watkins Glen DIY

No small stream trout fishing in the area. Late fall n winter can be unreal for lake run browns and atlantic salmon.lower end of streams and near warmwater discharges on the lakes are prime spots.

Re: Watkins Glen DIY

Don't be fooled, there is some great trout fishing there to be had. Cayuta Creek Just south of Watkins and Fall Creek out of Ithaca hold stocked and native trout year round. Fall has a mix of species and Cayuta is primarily browns with some that are truly massive. Mill Creek, flowing through Spencer has some browns as well, and occasionally holds monster rainbows. Wyncoop and McCorns also have fishing worth exporing. There are several small streams in the Alpine forest that will hold brookies all year. Most of the streams coming out of Watkins or Ithaca that have running water in them have sustainable trout populations (most of the time you will need to go to the head waters above the falls). I would actually go a step further and tell you that Newtown Creek in Horseheads, Post and Meads Creek in Corning all have fair brown trout fishing. If you go west to Avoca Coshocton Creek flows through Avoca (45 minute ride). Coshocton is blue ribbon brown trout water and many of the creeks between Wayland and there are very good, even for brookies. Good Luck
