Ice Fishing Guide

Does anyone in NEPA guide for ice fishing? I am interested in it, but I don't want to invest into something unless I am sure I like it…I'd like to target yellow perch.

Re: Ice Fishing Guide

Whether anyone "guides" or not IDK, but if you want to try it I'm sure you will get plenty of offers(might want to sign up on one of the ice fishing sites).

There are a few things you need - warm clothing, boots(you're standing on ICE=hunting boots not the best)hat, gloves/mittens(2 sets) and a license(you can generally get the new one in mid December and use it right away). Most of us have extra gear that one or two people can use.

As far as catching you can try to target certain fish - perch on mid lake flats or crappie along a weed edge at dusk, but remember that you are sort of stuck -whatever is down there is what you are catching(maybe ). Perch + crappie are both schooling fish and you might get slammed then nothing till the next school moves in. Or you hop around to different holes trying to keep on them.
I don't make the poconoe pilgramage too much any more but a lot of locals head up there.

Re: Ice Fishing Guide

Musky + eye's fall till spring(mid April). You just have to find them down here, neither one is common. Musky being a little easier to find. Perch I'd guess early spring during their spawning run(don't really target perch)

Re: Ice Fishing Guide

I don't know about any guiding out your way but if your targeting perch go deep and fish right on the bottom. A good 3 color flasher like the Micronar with a tight cone angle locates them well. Fish micro jigs with maggots or very small minnows on 2lb line and a very light spring bobber. Even if your not ready to fish yet get out there and talk to people on the ice and most will show you how to get'er done.

A light weight shanty and a lantern to help keep you warm is something you will want down the road if you like it. Ask all the questions you want and most here will help.
