Re: nite crawler harness question

I use 20# test......Bare minumum id go is #14. The lake I fish is pretty snaggy though.Even with #20 we go though about a dozen harnesses a day and on tournament days double that because we dont take the time to turn around and try to get them out.

Re: nite crawler harness question

I typically use 25# Trilene XT or P-Line 20# for my harnesses. I have used 30#, but it is tough to tie knots with line that heavy. I wouldn't recommend going much lighter than 20# as it has been my experience that durability will suffer after a few fish.

For hooks I generally use 1/0 octopus or beak hooks.

Re: nite crawler harness question

I have a few more questions, how long do you leave your leader, and do you guys use bottom bouncers or slip sinkers?

Re: nite crawler harness question

I do about an arms length give or take. We run bottom bouncers.

Re: nite crawler harness question

I tie my harnesses short. If I had to guess I would say they are around 10" from second hook to loop. IMO they become more of a hassle to store when you tie them longer. Depending on the application, I will also run a minimum of 3-4' of fluoro leader.

As far as weight, I wouldn't use slip sinkers and recommend using a fixed type of weight such as an inline, bottom bouncer, or even a 3-way rig. You can also use dipsy divers, jets, or riggers depending on the depths you are trying to hit. Remember as a VERY GENERAL rule of thumb that 1oz of weight will get you down 8-10' while trolling around 2mph.
