Don't ice fish, but caught quite a few nice walleyes there usually in early April. Went scouting in 5c yesterday... On private property from the road, counted over 40 deer on a hillside. A half mile away, not a single track crossing into the gameless lands. Checked another spot, gamelands.. Talked to 7 guys... Not a single deer. I found them though, at one of the archery only areas. Also came across a bedded doe, could barely go anymore. Was hit directly in the shoulder by an arrow, only about 4" penetration. Was a four blade... Probably a muzzy or slick trick.

Caught lots of walleyes at night with the bait attractor underwater light. Did you ever use one? We've been doing that for years now but last year I bought a 4ft florescent job and it is absolutely fascinating! Brings in the plankton followed by the Alwives followed by the walleyes and stripers and smallies etc.

Now as far as huntin 5C...Just came back from driving the gameland roads looking for tracks. NO NOT ROAD HUNTING! I have walked just about every acre, it seems, of 205 and found millions of boot tracks, thats it! Even the Mill Creek Road guys have dwindled. I'm retired and am out almost every day but the places you'ld think there HAD to be deer in are empty. And I'm talking about the thickest tangled up sidehill terrain that exists over there. I grew up running those hills, even did some farming on private land up where they're fixing that old stone bridge a little north of Weidasville. We had loads of deer back then. And quite a few big bucks too. Now add the posted property and the extended 5C season and the new housing developments and the opportunities for chasing deer around have depleted.

Used the light there, works well, but the alewives are not there in numbers as compared to maybe five years ago, mainly striped fish. That's where I was yesterday, mill creek road area, most deer are in the private property. Used to be excellent hunting down there, not so much anymore, what a shame.

About the Alwives: A marine biologist for the fish commission told me when I asked him about the drastic drop in the Alewife population, that alewives are cyclical. Heck I easily remember the nights when hundreds of spawning alwives splashed along the shores and huge splashes from attacking big fish sometimes scared the crap out of ya. Last summer we had 4 and 5in Alwives many nights. So even though the numbers are down the sizes were great.

You're telling me it's a shame!

That's why we've fallen in love with Clearfield Co.

good amount of quality deer, lots of open land, residents who for the most part who actually welcome hunters, OH and not overrun with hunters.

I would think that fishing would improve with less forage available. ??

Re: Hows the ice fishin up at Beltzville?

I live near SGL 205 as well, and your best bet is the archery only parts at the Game Preserve anymore. In the late season, all except 2 deer I seen at the archery only part. When I seen deer on the rifle part of Mill Creek, it was when I was getting my bow ready and they were coming across the hillside at the rifle part lol.

As far as ice fishing goes, I'm not sure how Beltzville is, but people are getting a lot of action at Mauch Chunk where they are hammering pickerel at will.

It Is What It Is Outdoors
