Yeah, after a while you learn to tell them apart pretty easily, unless they are small, then they look similar.

I don't bother to check, but pures have no scales on cheeks. Pike do, think tigers are partial. Generally fins are more rounded on tigers, but that isn't always so. Pures usually seem brownish or greenish brown. Tigers more pike colored with very light silvery sides. Basically, more you see the more you notice.

Re: pure vrs tiger

A quick way to tell the difference is to look for the distinct spots or markings on the cheek and gill cover, on a tiger, they look as if they were painted on using stencils, pure muskies won't have this. But the vertical barr pattern on the sides of a pure can look like a tiger. Plus what fishdoctor said.

Also, tails on tigers will be round. Purebred will be pointed. Pure can ware the tips down to be rounded some too, but most of the pures I have ever caught a pointed good. I think the gill plate is the easiest way to tell for sure.

Re: pure vrs tiger

Some pures will have spots on the plates, but not the cool pattern of a tiger or pike.

See the pattern on the gill plates? Tiger. I will see if I can find some of my purebred pics. We catch mostly tiger's here.
