Question.... Eyes., Leader ?

A friend and myself went to a local river to target some late Trout. I think it was late May ? Anyhow, we ended up getting into steady Walleye, but MOST would just sheer out line at the hookset. We did manage to land 4 or so. I would like to specifically taret them this year, but was wondering what kind of line set-up to go with. Would simply going with an 8lb or 10lb mono be good enout to prevent line break ? or do I need some sort of leader ?

Adding: We will be using bait.

Re: Question.... Eyes., Leader ?

8lb Trilene XL has always worked very well for me. I mostly jig deep lakes, just tie direct.

Re: Question.... Eyes., Leader ?

I use light lines, usually 6 lb test, with no issues catching walleye.

Re: Question.... Eyes., Leader ?

I use 4lb fluorocarbon line. Never any heavier than that. I rarely have any issues. I've landed walleye up to 29" with 4lb line.

Re: Question.... Eyes., Leader ?

I chase eyes around pretty frequently and I have never gone lighter than 6# and generally stick with 8-10# for most applications other than trolling. You shouldn't have any need for leaders if you're using mono/fluoro in the 6-10# range.

Re: Question.... Eyes., Leader ?

Not sure what my friend was using, but I was using Stren Magnathin in 6lb. This has the size of a 4lb line, but a tensile strength of 6 lb line. I myself had to have at least 5 breakoff's on hookset, not sure about my friend. If we didn't land a few Eye's I wouldn't have been sure what was doing it, but would have suspected Eye's.

So, what I'm hearing is, a solid 8lb mono should do the trick.

I should add, this is drifting in a pretty stiff current, so it probably adds to the tension and breakoff rates.

Minnows for bait? Could be pickerel or pike.

Re: Question.... Eyes., Leader ?

Try Silver Thread AN-40 it is formulated for "all weather" and the 6lb is about the same diameter as magna-thin. It is about all I use on my spinning rod trout, shad, smallies, walleye and a few suprise musky's in the mix. Sadly It is getting hard to find around my area, Cabela's had it in their store but they cut most of their line aisle down to a 1/4 aisle and most of that is "their brand" . Bass Pro was still carrying it last spring.

You could also try an icefishing mono - again formulated for colder weather

1/2 Nightcrawle. Yough (the river) isn't really noted for many Pike or Pickerel. Seeins how we landed a few Eyes, I'm stickin with all Eye's sheering the line.
