Wear white at night or don't swim 2 hours after eating. Depends on what the charter cost, how long it was and how hard the guy works to help you get fish. I'd say start at at least $20 and you can work your way up.

I'm so far behind I think I'm in first place.

Re: Tip for first mate

Wow, you guys are cheap...

Tip to the mate should be 10-15% of the charter cost, IMO, and trend to the high side if you had a good time and he/she works their butt off (even if you don't limit out). That's why it's called fishing and not "catching."

Most charters are north of $600 these days so I say start at $60 and go up from there. For a 4 man charter, that is $15 a head which is not unreasonable at all.

Heck, back in '91 to '93 when I mated out of Erie my "cheap" tips were $40 and most avg. $60 or so and that was on a $400 charter. So yeah, I am a little biased when giving this advice. Most, not all, but most mates work their tails off to get the clients on fish. If they under-perform, I suggest adjusting your tip downwards appropriately but also give them some constructive criticism as to why and maybe they'll do better the next time.

Re: Tip for first mate

Start at $80 and go up from there. The first mate spends at least an extra hour often two getting the boat ready and put away after your trip. Not many of us going to work for under $10 an hour.
