Y-bone removal made easy on Pike

A friend of mine does a great job getting the Y-bones out.

A guy that goes with us does a decent job at this but the larger the fish the easier it is!

Re: Y-bone removal made easy on Pike

I've taken the Y bone out of more pike than I can remember. Everyone I fish with used to say "no sense keeping those for a shore lunch they're too bony". I opened my big mouth and now I get to clean them all. From the video though it looks like you could save a ton of time by getting rid of that monstrous electric knife and going with a really good standard fillet knife.

Y bone ? As in why bother. Lol. Pike has it's fans. But with walleye like that you can't go wrong. Easy cleaning pristine filets. I have a thing about eating big fish in regards to their species maturity. I once release a 100 lb Cooke inlet halibut settling for two 30 pounders. One the bubba boys on the charter said are you nuts!!!! I said possibly.

Re: Y-bone removal made easy on Pike

We don't keep the larger pike either. 25-30 inches is about right for us. We keep walleye to eat as well but last time we had a fish fry most people couldn't tell the difference. They are a very good eating fish who get a bad rap. Most people give them a bad rap just because they heard others badmouth them and usually have never tried it themselves.

Re: Y-bone removal made easy on Pike

i have had pike my uncle bought back from Canada and i love it! The other day i did a musky and when you cook them the meat shrinks enough that you can pull the bones right out.

Now your diggin' where the 'tators are!
