Not Your Typical Opener Weekend

Although I don’t typically target stocked trout streams during the year, I do enjoy the SE regional opening day as it brings together a few of my friends from high school, some of which I only see that day. Unfortunately this year, our baseball league had it’s opener as well. As I coach a team, I couldn’t skip the opening day parade (just as a side note, I really hate parades).

With some PTO days to burn, I took off on Friday and decided to target two streams that are in the next county over. I had fished the first stream a handful of times in the latter part of the season, but never fished it in early spring. As soon as I reached the stream, I was greeted with fresh boot tracks. Usually I’d move on, but I decided to stick it out. The action was so-so at best as the boot tracks also covered the distance of the open water. After an hour and 45 minutes, I had reached the limits of the open water and headed off to the next stream.

Wild or stocked holdover? The stream is not stocked, but this stream is a tributary to a stocked stream about 1 mile away.

The second stream was nearby and after driving up and down the stream for a few miles, I decided on a section that appeared to have the best habitat. It was a nice looking stream, but I only caught 2 trout and they both came from the same pool. Hard to judge a stream by fishing it for only an hour in the early spring, but I just might give it another try in more favorable conditions.

After Saturday’s opening day baseball ceremonies and my oldest son’s game, I had to take my twins to a birthday party in the early afternoon. As there’s a half decent stream right down the road from the party’s location, I offered to drive the kids and “hang around”. With the sunny skies and plenty of people walking around the stream, I wasn’t expecting great numbers. Much to my surprise, the action was on fire from start to finish. There were a couple of other anglers on the water that I had to dance around, but every pool and run held decent fish. The hour and 15 minutes I had allotted to fishing flew by.

Far from a traditional opening day weekend, but it was nice to back on the water and kick-off the 2019 season.

Yes they are, and I know that. Why I posted Brookies I don't know.

Nice posts. Only familiar with native bookies where I fish. Some of those look pretty small for stocked fish, are the browns breeding there?

If Sunday hunting was not already illegal, who among us would not laugh at making it so?

Dude that one brown is JACKED! That is a stream I would absolutely try again before too long. That is one of the most beefed up browns I ever seen.

All of the trout appear to me to be wild brown trout, so yes, the brown trout would be breeding there.

The odd "hump" in the next to last trout photo is very likely a "dip" rather than a "hump" and is probably a healed-over stab wound from a great blue heron.

Beautiful day for the statewide opener. Hope all the anglers that are out today are enjoying it.

Take some stockies for the frying pan but consider releasing the wild trout, please. Enjoy.
