Haven't used a flyrod for a good many years. But you can tell who the small stream meat fishermen are............just look for the guys fishing bait with flyrods.

I used only about 3 or 4 feet of leader on level, floating Cortland 333 in a 7 1/2' rod. DEADLY for precise presentation in hard-to-reach places.

I dont fish bait on my fly rods but would probably just use a a 7' -9' tapered leader or simply just 7' of 6lb fluoro. I would just make sure the leader is shorter than the rod length so you aren't fighting the fly line falling back through the guides.

Back in my younger days I would commonly see older gentlemen using fly rods to fish small brush infested streams. There fly reels had only mono on them since they never actually used them for fly fishing. They also never really casted just kinda dropped there bait into the stream.

Nothing at all wrong with bait fishing with a fly rod. I grew up doing it. Heck, I've even fished spinners with my fly rod.

When I bait fish on a fly rod I use a size 18 dry fly hook and dead drift wax worms. A lot of my wife's family dead drift minnows on fly rods using only mono spooled on their fly rods. My fly rod is kept with normal WF fly line and I use a 6' piece of 2lb mono. I never use an actual leader because when a trout swallows the hook I just nip the line at the lip and set the fish free.

Yep, I too grew up bait fishing with my fly rods (never kept much of anything... meat fisher indeed lol...) and we always just carried a spool of 4lb test mono in our pockets and when we saw the size and average depth of the stream cut a piece off. Small, shallow streams usually 3'-4', bigger deeper water was anywhere you wanted, from 6' up. Always used redworms. Started using wax worms in the last few years I did it and that worked well too. For catch and release, not a bad idea to pinch the barbs down. I always use a #10 or #12 baitholder type hook. Caught many a trout on that rig in my early fishing years.

A bad day hunting rabbits beats a good day of anything else!

I was brought up fishing bait on a fly rod. We used 4-5 feet of 4lb mono on a sinking line. Mostly fished minnows on a wire rig with double hooks, but also red worms.
