Mixed Bag

Yesterday I decided to mix things up a little bit and hit a mountain stream early with the fly rod and then I met my father later in the afternoon to hit the bigger waters with spinners.

I fished the mountain stream for about 5 hours catching 18 beautiful trout. Not the numbers I caught last year, but the fish seemed bigger...perhaps their diet is including more of the smaller fish, or perhaps all the boot prints indicated the stream has seen a few fisherman already. (Ignore the watermarks on the pictures, I forgot to click that feature off when exporting)

A few casts later this guy took the beetle:

For some reason, they have sign up saying you shouldn't cross this bridge...typical of the government!

Found a few natives too:

I was getting close to the car again when I came to a pool that last year I caught a handsome native out of, but when landing him I caught a glimpse of something larger. One of those, was that a fish, or just my imagination? Well let's just say when the fly disappeared and I I set the hook, the rod really bent!

Biggest I've caught from that stream, a stream you can jump across in places!

I was trying a few shots that were the opposite of the flowing water "cotton candy" shots...I think I need a different angle:

After that it was down to the bigger waters and the spinners were I caught 22 before calling it a night:

Flow in the big stream was almost exactly the same as Monday, up from normal, but it was that beautiful green color. Saw 5 other anglers, but man were the trout FAT. Water was also 64 at 2 pm, Not looking forward to the 90 degree days next week, hopefully the night time lows and the flowing springs keep the temps down. The air temp at 5:15 when I started fishing was 49...perfect!

Thanks for reading!

Re: Mixed Bag

Great post and pictures as usual! I rarely flyfish for trout, but I have had a strong urge all week. I may have to do a split trip this weekend as well. Thanks for the motivation.

Re: Mixed Bag

I enjoy the color richness of your pics and your spent wine berry photo is excellent. That's not something you see photod ever. Quite beautiful.

Re: Mixed Bag

I fished that first stream two weeks ago...and crossed the bridge. The water in the big stream was high and fishing was slow but the small stream was awesome. That was my first time ever fishing anywhere up in that area. After seeing all of your foam beetle success I started using them. I haven't fished dry flies in over a decade and they are a great way to get back into that.
