Rough Day

With the impending "Weather of Doom" forecast for today, I decided...well, my wife decided for me...that I better fish near the vehicle. No 5 mile trek in and out today, and with the water in most of the better streams well over normal levels, and looking like chocolate milk, I had no options other then to hit a heavily stocked, and heavily fished water (saw 7 other anglers today). Things started off good, got a few nice pictures before daylight:

Even caught a trout a few casts in:

Then all heck broke loose. I, my vest, backpack, rod, and most importantly the camera went in the drink. Luckily the camera came out OK, but the carrying case was wet and a wet case = a foggy lens, so no more pics for the day. That was the first of 3 serious dunkings on the day. More then I had the last 4 years total.

I decided to jump in/jump out up the 4 mile stretch of creek alternating between spinning rod and fly rod. The fly rod proved most effective, accounting for 16 of the 20 trout. I got a lot of follows with the spinners, but they've seen that all before. Of the 20, only 2 were holdovers, a brown and a rainbow, the rest were all streambred browns. Not the numbers I was holing for, but i do love watching them crash a fly and none of the other anglers I talked to had any success, so there's that.

Hopefully next week I can get on some better I watch my trash can float by the office window...perfect.

Catch-and-Release wild trout.

Re: Rough Day

Beautiful stream photos. I'm a fan.

I also looked at many of your photos in the other forum. I believe it was the Outdoor Photo Gallery forum, and they are spectacular.

I agree. Those trout have probably seen too much metal, thus the lack of interest. In my opinion spinners don't represent anything a trout normally eats, so it's rather easy for them to avoid them once they taste metal a time or two. That's why it is important to rest a stream for a couple weeks before a return visit with spinners. Then you have to keep your fingers crossed that no one else has fished spinners there during the rest period.
