Finally, A Nice Golden

I always told myself that when I caught my first 20"+ trout, I would get it mounted. Well, I finally did, a really nice golden yesterday afternoon, but I made the decision to release it. I don't know why, but it just felt right at the moment. I find myself second guess that decision today, but I can always get a replica mount someday and have the best of both worlds...

My father in law decided to fish Brokenstraw Creek yesterday. They had restocked it on Friday and we thought that the weather was just too nice not to. We fished our way downstream for about a 1/4 mile and had each caught a handful, all bows but 1 brown that I landed. We finally made it to the deepest hole in that stretch and they were hammering pretty good there with each of us pulling in another handful of bows. I ripped my yellow and red Panther Martin through the bottom of the pool and thought that I saw a golden follow it and then turn back. I cast again and once again caught a glimpse. I was 99% sure it was a fish but with the way the sun was filtered through the trees and the breeze that was blowing, I couldn't be 100% in what I was seeing. Well, third cast in and BAM, there was no doubt that it was a fish at that point. It put up a solid fight and I played it for a good while, coaxing it into shallower water where I finally landed it.

Beautiful fish, definitely the biggest trout that I have ever caught. I have no idea exactly how big it was because I didn't have a tape or a scale with me but I am guessing 22-24" and 4-5 lbs.

Beautiful trout! Without causing problems (I don't want to do that I swear) I just want to make one suggestion. Releasing fish handled by the gills could result in death (it strikes me that you most likely already know this lol). Not saying it does 100% of the time, and I'm glad you released it to live another day, it's just trout don't handle as well that way as bass and warmwater species. Again, congrats on a great fish!

I hear ya on that. I initially had every intention on keeping it and that is why I grabbed the gills. I WAS gentle when I did it and it was after the photos that I decided to release it. It swam away with no problems and I watched it for 45 minutes afterward before I left and everything looked fine. I sure hope it made it to another day though...

If it was ok 45 minutes after you caught it, it's fine! I figured you had intended originally to keep it. Heck, I've done stuff like that myself I didn't want to minimize the triumph of your catch lol. The only golden I ever caught was a 14" on a spinner in Elton Sportsmen's dam. I'd like to eventually catch one of the big boys myself!
