ME Landlocked Atlantic Salmon

Many years ago, I read an article in a Sports Afield magazine about landlocked Atlantic Salmon in Maine. Apparently, there are some lakes with rivers running into them that host salmon runs. Has anybody gone to Maine for this type of fishing?

I did not fish them in Maine, but I did catch them in Newfoundland. The ones I caught were EXTREMELY hard hitters and fighters. A real joy to catch. The locals told me they were very good to eat, but I tossed all mine back. Biggest ones I caught were around 3 to 4 pounds.

Re: ME Landlocked Atlantic Salmon

The Landlocked Salmon of Maine are not at all uncommon. I think you may be confusing the Atlantic Salmon runs and the Landlock Salmon fishery. In the spring in lakes that support Landlock Salmon the fish run up the rivers and streams. There is quite the active fishery for the Landlocks. The Atlantic Salmon fishery has had its ups and downs. Not sure of the status right now, but I remember as a kid seeing some very nice Atlantic's that were caught at the dam in Bangor.

I caught landlocked salmon in Alaska. They were pound for pound the hardest fighting fish I've ever caught. They went bizzerk when caught. Not very big 2-3 lbs. but turned inside out when caught. Scales flying everywhere.

Green Lake and Graham Lake! Right next to the Green Lake National Fish Hatchery which deals only with atlantic salmon! The numbers are not vast but I have seen them caught.

You want me to put my ear to the ground? Listen for hoof beats? Look for broken twigs?

When I was younger my dad used to go to Lake George in NY and kill them in the spring...pretty, hard fighting fish.

Re: ME Landlocked Atlantic Salmon

Yes, for many years and I still go up but I haven't been up in a number of years. Grand lake stream was the place that I went to. Not only did Sports Afield but Outdoor life and Field & Stream wrote about this place. This was fished buy Ted Williams and he was well known in that part of the state. You can still find pictures of him in the one lodge in town(Weatherbys). Curt Gowdy and a number of other famous sports writers hit that same stream. The stream runs for 3 mile between the West grand lake and Big Lake. This is part of the St.Croix drainage system. There is a hatchery located right in the town of Grand lake stream but those salmon are not what you would think of as "hatchery fish". This stream is fly fishing only. You can fish the lakes and troll the mouths with lures if you like but still the best lures to use are flies. Once you hook into one of these fish, its part fish, part rocket. Most times, you're looking at that fish jumping 5 times. Gray ghost and the black ghost are the popular flies but you still can catch them on pheasant tails and the like. Average fish ran about 4 lbs.
